Recent advancements in cornea surgery include the following
Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK)
This procedure is designed to treat corneal disorders involving the front or middle layers of the cornea, sparing the back layer of the cornea. Diseases treated with DALK include Kerataconus and corneal scars.
Descemets Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK)
This procedure is specifically designed to treat corneal disorders involving the back surface of the cornea with no treatment to the front or middle layers of the cornea. Diseases treated with DSEK include Fuch’s Dystrophy and Bullous Keratopathy. These new procedures allow for the rapid recover from corneal “transplant” surgery that previously required many months of healing.
Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK)
This is the traditional surgical procedure involving a full thickness transplant of the cornea. This surgery treats any layer of the cornea and has a long track record of success. The disadvantage of this surgery is an approximate twelve (12) month healing/recovery period.
