How Long Does Laser Eye Surgery Last?
If you are considering laser eye surgery, you probably have several questions about the procedure. How long does it last? What are the side effects? Will you have to go through the surgery again in the future?
The answers to these questions can help you make an informed decision as to whether or not you want to undergo a life-changing procedure.
Duration
LASIK eye surgery generally takes 30 minutes or less. In just less than 30 minutes, the surgery can permanently reshape your cornea and correct your vision. It’s incredible to think that something you have likely been dealing with for years can be corrected so quickly!
Post-Surgery Vision Correction Needs
For most patients over the age of 40, even after eye surgery patients need to have additional treatments or corrective lenses. LASIK cannot correct the need for reading glasses, for example. But it can help with nearsighted vision, so you will only need glasses when you need to read.
Laser eye surgery is permanent. Your eyes can change as the years go by, however. Because of natural changes that cannot be predicted, you might eventually need a touch-up procedure. Laser surgery corrects your current issues, but it cannot prevent future changes from occurring.
In essence, laser eye surgery results are permanent, but your eyes can still change over time and you may need a touch up. Since the eyes change slowly, in most cases, it should be many years before you need to undergo another procedure once you have had LASIK.
Post-Surgery Eye Health
After you have LASIK, it is important to continue with annual eye exams. After surgery, you should continue your follow-up visits even though you might deem them unnecessary. Your eye doctor will run important tests to ensure the overall health of your eyes. These tests are still important even after your vision is corrected.
If you have further questions about laser eye surgery and what it can do for your eyesight, talk with your doctor and get deeper answers. This will allow you to make the best decision for your situation.
